How to clean your aligners for a bright and clear smile – check out these tips..

Nowadays, clear aligners are increasingly being used as an alternative to traditional braces for straightening teeth and achieving a beautiful smile. Because they are transparent, they remain virtually invisible, allowing people to wear them without any hesitation. However, keeping these invisible plastic trays clean and clear presents a significant challenge. If not maintained properly, they can accumulate bacteria, turn yellow, and even lead to bad breath. Therefore, proper cleaning and care of your aligners are essential.

The simplest and most fundamental way to keep your aligners clean is to wash them thoroughly every morning and night. Always use a separate, soft-bristled toothbrush for this purpose. Apply a small amount of mild liquid soap or an unscented dish soap to the brush and gently clean the aligners. It is crucial to remember never to use regular toothpaste for cleaning them; the abrasive particles in toothpaste can create tiny scratches on the aligners, making them appear cloudy and worn out.

Additionally, temperature control is equally important. Never use hot or boiling water to wash your aligners. Exposure to high heat can cause the plastic to warp or lose its shape, preventing the aligners from fitting correctly on your teeth. Always use room-temperature or lukewarm water instead. Furthermore, be sure to remove your aligners whenever you eat or consume beverages other than water—such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, or juice. If you eat or drink while wearing your aligners, food particles and pigments can get trapped in them, causing them to become dirty and discolored (yellowish).

Always remember to thoroughly brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back on after a meal. If small food particles remain trapped between your teeth and you place your aligners over them, bacteria will begin to grow; this significantly increases the risk of tooth decay and cavities. Additionally, you can use aligner-cleaning tablets or a soaking solution—as recommended by your dentist—to deep-clean your aligners two to three times a week. This effectively eliminates stubborn bacteria and any unpleasant odors.

Whenever you remove your aligners, never leave them lying around or wrapped in a napkin, as they could easily be lost or accidentally thrown away. Always store them securely in their designated air-tight protective case. By keeping these simple yet crucial points in mind, you can ensure your aligners remain clean, clear, and germ-free, allowing your treatment to proceed successfully and without any interruptions.
