Dussehra is not merely about the burning of Ravana’s effigy or the victory of good over evil; it is also associated with various religious beliefs and traditions. One such tradition is the sighting of the *Neelkanth* (Indian Roller) bird. It is believed that spotting this bird on the day of Vijayadashami is a sign of good fortune. According to religious belief, seeing a *Neelkanth* brings happiness and prosperity into one’s life and increases the prospect of auspicious outcomes in the future. This belief is linked to a well-known legend involving Lord Rama, the slaying of Ravana, and Lord Shiva.
In religious tradition, the *Neelkanth* bird is considered a symbol of Lord Shiva. This belief is the primary reason why spotting the bird on the day of Dussehra is considered especially rewarding. According to Ujjain-based astrologer Anand Bhardwaj, the *Neelkanth* is regarded as a harbinger of good fortune. It is believed that catching a glimpse of the bird on Vijayadashami brings positivity into a person’s life and paves the way for happiness and prosperity.
Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva after the slaying of Ravana.
According to mythology, Ravana—besides being a great scholar—was also a devotee of Lord Shiva. After slaying Ravana in the war in Lanka, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to seek liberation from the sin of *Brahmahatya* (the killing of a learned Brahmin). As per tradition, Lord Shiva appeared before Lord Rama in the form of a *Neelkanth* bird to bestow his blessings. It is said that the custom of considering the sighting of a *Neelkanth* on Dussehra to be auspicious stems from this very legend.
A belief in bringing happiness and peace to the home.
According to popular belief, if a *Neelkanth* bird is spotted on the roof, in the courtyard, or in the vicinity of a house on the day of Vijayadashami, it is considered an auspicious sign. It is believed that this ensures the continued presence of happiness, peace, and prosperity within the family. Along with this, there is also a wish for a reduction in life’s troubles and for success in one’s endeavors.
A rarely seen bird becomes a symbol of faith.
The Indian roller—known in Hindi as the 'Neelkanth' (literally 'blue-throated')—is recognized for its striking blue plumage and distinctive appearance. In religious belief and folk tradition, catching a glimpse of this bird on the festival of Dussehra is considered a harbinger of good fortune—a belief that has been passed down through generations. The tradition of seeking a sighting of the Neelkanth on Vijayadashami reflects the idea that a festival is not merely a celebration, but also an opportunity to connect with nature, faith, and ancient mythology.
