The festival of Dussehra is considered a symbol of the victory of good over evil. On this day, people perform prayers and clean their homes, seeking prosperity, well-being, and happiness. According to Vastu Shastra, decorating one's home and planting certain auspicious plants before Dussehra can foster the flow of positive energy and bring prosperity. Pandit Akhilesh Pandey, an astrologer from Rishikesh, notes that the *Shami* plant is the foremost among those recommended for planting before Dussehra. In mythology, the *Shami* plant is held in high regard and is considered sacred; it is said to have a direct connection to Lord Ram and the era of the Ramayana.

Pandit Akhilesh explains that placing a *Shami* plant near the main entrance or in an appropriate spot helps eliminate negative energy from within the home, allowing positive energy to circulate. Similarly, the *Aparajita* (butterfly pea) plant is a true blessing for a household. Its beautiful blue flowers not only soothe the mind but also help alleviate stress and unrest, fostering a happier home environment.
Caring for the Banana Plant
Pandit Akhilesh adds that any discussion about plants would be incomplete without mentioning *Tulsi* (holy basil). *Tulsi* is a hallmark of the traditional Indian home; when placed in the correct direction according to Vastu—the northeast (*Ishaan Kona*)—its benefits are multiplied, ensuring an enduring atmosphere of happiness, peace, and prosperity. Planting a banana tree in your courtyard during the auspicious occasion of Dussehra is considered highly beneficial from a religious perspective. It is believed that nurturing a banana plant brings prosperity and abundance to the home and is said to signify the presence of Goddess Lakshmi herself.
