If you have filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) for this year and the status on the portal shows 'Processed,' but the tax refund has not yet reached your bank account, there is no need to worry. It is not guaranteed that the refund will be credited to your account immediately after the ITR is processed. Delays can occur due to various reasons, such as issues with bank details, PAN-Aadhaar linking, TDS credits, IFSC codes, or outstanding tax demands from previous years.

In such a scenario, it is important to understand how long the refund process takes and what steps to take if the money has not been received.
When is the ITR refund received?
An income tax refund arises when the tax you have paid exceeds your actual tax liability. This tax could have been paid via TDS, TCS, Advance Tax, or Self-Assessment Tax. Once your final tax liability is determined after accounting for all eligible deductions and exemptions, the Income Tax Department processes your ITR, and the excess amount paid is refunded to you.
Many taxpayers who filed their ITR well before the July 31st deadline may have already received their refunds. However, others may have to wait for the refund after the processing is complete.
Why hasn't the refund arrived even after the ITR is 'Processed'?
It is important to understand that an ITR status of 'Processed' does not mean the refund will reach your bank account immediately. According to the Income Tax Department, refund processing begins only after the e-verification of the return. Generally, it can take about 4 to 5 weeks for the refund to be credited to your bank account. So, if your ITR has been processed but the money hasn't arrived after some time, first check your Income Tax Refund status. If you haven't received the refund even after the expected timeframe, check your emails and SMS messages as well; you might have received an intimation notice from the Income Tax Department.
What should you do first if the Income Tax refund hasn't arrived?
If your ITR has been processed but the refund hasn't reached your account, log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal first. You will need a valid User ID and password for this. Next, check the status of your refund. Also, verify that the bank account details provided in the ITR—including the IFSC code—are correct.
If the refund has been processed but the money hasn't been credited to your bank account, you need to update your bank details. Ensuring your bank account information is accurate and up-to-date is essential for receiving the refund on time. Additionally, your PAN must be linked to your Aadhaar, and your ITR must have been filed correctly with a refund claim.
How to check ITR refund status
If you want to know the current stage of your ITR and the status of your refund, follow these simple steps:
Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns.
Select the relevant Assessment Year (e.g., AY 2026-27) and click on 'View Details'.
You can then view the refund status of your ITR.
What are the main reasons for ITR refund delays?
Refund money may fail to reach your bank account for various reasons. Even a minor error regarding your bank account or tax details can cause a delay.
If the bank account number provided in the ITR is incorrect, the refund will not reach your account.
If your PAN is not operative, it can also lead to issues with the refund.
Pre-validation of the bank account is mandatory to receive the refund. If your bank account is not pre-validated, the refund could get stuck.
If the name registered with the bank account does not match the PAN card details, there may be issues in crediting the refund.
If you have entered an incorrect or invalid IFSC code in your ITR, the refund cannot be transferred.
If the account designated for the refund has been closed, the funds will not be credited.
If the bank account is inactive, frozen, or dormant, difficulties may arise in transferring the refund.
Technical failures or rejections by the bank can sometimes occur during the refund transfer process.
If there are outstanding tax demands from previous years, your refund may be adjusted against those dues.
Refunds may also be delayed if there are discrepancies in the ITR, TDS, or income details that require further verification by the Income Tax Department.
Do Not Ignore Income Tax Notices
If any discrepancy is found in your ITR, you may receive an intimation or notice from the Income Tax Department. Do not ignore such communications. Regularly check the e-filing portal and your registered email. If you receive a tax demand notice, carefully read the details provided and respond promptly as required. Failure to reply to the notice on time could delay your refund and lead to further complications.
Beware of Fraudulent Tax Notices
Cyber fraud can also occur under the guise of income tax refunds or notices. Therefore, do not immediately click on links found in emails or SMS messages from unknown sources. If you receive a tax-related message, be sure to verify it first by visiting the official Income Tax e-filing portal.
