Everyone eagerly awaits *Sharadiya Navratri* in Hinduism. These nine days are dedicated entirely to devotion to Goddess Ambe, the worship of divine power (*Shakti*), and inviting positive energy into the home. In 2026, these auspicious days begin on Sunday, October 11. Following the worship of the Goddess's various forms over the nine days, this grand festival will conclude with *Dussehra* on Tuesday, October 20.

During Navratri, the *Kalash Sthapana* (ritual installation of the sacred pot) takes place in almost every household. Devotees decorate the Goddess's altar (*Chauki*) and light an *Akhand Jyot* (an eternal flame) with deep reverence. If you are planning to set up the Goddess's altar this Navratri, it is essential to be aware of the associated guidelines.
**The Correct Direction for Setting Up the Altar**
According to *Vastu Shastra*, the *Ishan Kon*—or the North-East corner of the house—is considered the primary abode of deities. Therefore, the altar should always be placed in this direction. If, for some reason, space is unavailable there, the North or East directions are also considered auspicious.
Try to ensure that you face East or North while performing the worship. Before setting up the altar, clean the area thoroughly and make sure to spread a clean red or yellow cloth over the wooden platform.
**5 Things to Keep in Mind While Decorating the Altar**
Never leave shoes, slippers, brooms, or clutter near the Goddess's altar. The place of worship must remain absolutely pure and clean.
Always use intact and clean idols, images, and *Kalash* (sacred pots) for worship. Keeping broken or damaged items is not considered auspicious from a religious perspective.
If you have lit an *Akhand Jyot* (eternal flame) for the nine days, place it away from curtains, paper, or cloth. The location of the flame should be safe and shielded from the wind.

Set up the altar in a spot that is away from high-traffic areas where people frequently pass by. The constant movement of people can distract from the worship and disrupt the arrangements.
Only fresh flowers should be offered during the worship of Goddess Durga. Do not leave old or withered flowers in the prayer area for too long; remove them regularly.
