Stock Market Holiday: Will the stock markets be closed on the 19th or the 20th? How many holidays are there in October?

The week beginning October 18 is highly significant for the Indian stock market. Not only is the historic IPO of Jio Platforms expected during this period, but the week also includes holidays. With the festival of Dussehra approaching, there is some confusion among investors regarding which day the stock market will remain closed—October 19 or October 20.

According to information provided by the BSE and NSE, there will be only four days of trading between October 19 and October 25, with the remaining days being holidays. Market holidays not only affect trading activity but also impact settlements for equities, debt, and commodities, as the holidays lead to delays in the settlement process. Therefore, if you intend to trade next week, you should plan accordingly. There will be no trading on either the BSE or the NSE on the days designated as holidays.

Will the holiday fall on the 19th or the 20th?
The BSE and NSE have announced that the stock market will remain closed on October 20 on the occasion of Dussehra. This means that trading on both exchanges will be suspended early next week. While trading will take place on Monday, there will be no trading on either the BSE or the NSE on Tuesday, October 20. According to the exchanges, all trading—including equities, the SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing) segment, derivatives, commodities, bonds, and forex—will remain suspended on October 20.

Will the MCX also remain closed?
The MCX (Multi Commodity Exchange) will not be closed on October 20 for Dussehra. According to information provided by the exchange, the MCX will not remain shut for the entire day on October 20. In fact, on any given business day, trading on the MCX takes place across two separate sessions. Trading in gold, silver, crude oil, copper, zinc, and lead takes place in two sessions: the first from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the second from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM. On the occasion of Dussehra, there will be no trading during the morning session on the MCX; however, the second session will proceed as scheduled from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM.

Banks will also remain closed.
On October 20, the occasion of Dussehra, banks—much like the stock market—will remain closed. Therefore, it is advisable to complete any necessary banking transactions a day in advance, on October 19. The RBI has released a list of holidays for October, which includes a declared holiday for Dussehra on October 20 in most states across the country.
