Dr. Parneesh Arora, Director of Interventional Cardiology at Medanta Hospital, Noida, explains that heart disease is emerging as a leading cause of death in both men and women. Interestingly, the signs and symptoms of a heart attack differ between men and women. Men typically report these symptoms more readily, but these symptoms are often overlooked in women. However, recognizing these symptoms in time and seeking medical help can save lives.
Let's first discuss the symptoms in men. Four main symptoms appear before a heart attack. The first symptom is severe chest pain or pressure. If a person suddenly experiences intense heaviness, tightness, or sharp pain on the left side of the chest, it could be a sign of an impending heart attack.
The second symptom or sign of a heart attack in men is the pain radiating to the left arm. Sometimes this pain extends to the face, specifically the jaw. If there is sudden, intense pain in the left arm and jaw, it is considered a sign of a heart attack.
The third symptom is difficulty breathing. If a patient is experiencing chest pain or pain in the left arm along with shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, it should be immediately considered a symptom of a heart attack, and a doctor should be consulted. This indicates that the heart is in significant distress.
The fourth symptom of a heart attack in men is sweating and feeling unwell. If someone suddenly feels discomfort and is unable to speak, it could be a sign of a sudden heart attack.
