Women's Health: Can you donate blood during your period? Women should know these myths and facts..

Donating blood is a very noble act that can save lives. However, many people are confused about whether women can donate blood during their periods. Some say it's safe, while others say it shouldn't be done. This confusion often prevents many women from donating blood.

But in reality, doctors say there is no problem with donating blood during menstruation. Dr. Lavanya Kiran, an obstetrics and fertility expert at KIMS Hospital in Electronic City, Bengaluru, has explained the truth and misconceptions about this issue, which are detailed below.

Myth 1: Donating blood during periods is dangerous. It weakens the body. Fact: During menstruation, a woman loses an average of only 30-80 ml of blood, but approximately 500 ml of blood is taken during a blood donation. If the hemoglobin level in the body is normal, a healthy body quickly replenishes this blood loss.

Myth 2: Menstrual blood contaminates the donated blood. Fact: When donating blood, the blood is taken from the blood vessels, not from the uterus. Therefore, menstrual blood does not affect the donated blood in any way.

Myth 3: Blood donation centers do not accept blood from women during their periods. Fact: No blood donation center refuses blood donation because of menstruation. Whether or not you can donate blood depends on your hemoglobin level and your overall health, not on your menstrual cycle.

Myth 4: Donating blood increases menstrual pain or causes anemia. Fact: Women who experience very heavy bleeding or weakness should postpone blood donation based on their health. Those with normal or moderate bleeding will not experience any problems. Drinking plenty of water and eating iron-rich foods after donating blood helps in quick recovery. Myth 5: You should wait until your period is over. Truth: You don't need to wait until your period is completely over to donate blood. You can donate blood during your period or immediately afterward. If you're feeling very tired, you can postpone donating blood for a few days, but it's not necessary.

By understanding these scientific facts, women can come forward to donate blood without fear. Additionally, keeping environmental protection in mind, doctors recommend using menstrual cups and cloth pads.
