Method

To make Arhar Dal, first, wash the lentils thoroughly and put them in a pan or pressure cooker. Then add 3 cups of water and 1/2 tsp turmeric to it. Give 2-3 whistles in the pressure cooker. If you are making the lentils in a pan, then boil the lentils till they become soft.

After the lentils are cooked, mash them well so that a thick and soft paste of the lentils is ready. Now heat ghee or oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.

Now add chopped green chilies, ginger and garlic and fry for a while. Then add tomatoes and cook till they become soft. Now add salt and red chili powder as per taste.

Once the tempering is ready, add it to the boiled dal. Mix well and boil for 5-10 minutes. Taste the dal once, add salt and chili if needed. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve. You can also add lemon juice on top if you want. Serve it with hot rice or roti.
