Home Remedies for Red and Swollen Eyes: In today's fast-paced life, we spend most of our time in front of laptops, computers, and smartphone screens. Whether it is office work, studying, or watching reels during downtime, our eyes are constantly exposed to the blue light emitted by screens. Consequently, by the end of the day, our eyes often become red and suffer from burning, stinging sensations, and puffiness.

If you, too, struggle with tired and red eyes every evening, you do not always need to rely on eye drops or medication. Our kitchens and Ayurveda offer several simple yet effective home remedies that can provide immediate cooling and relief to your eyes without any side effects.
Let’s explore five such excellent natural remedies:
1. Cold Compress –
A cold compress works fastest when your eyes feel red and swollen. The cold temperature soothes swollen blood vessels and reduces inflammation.
How to use: Take a clean cotton cloth and soak it in ice-cold water. Wring out the excess water and place the cloth over your closed eyes for 5 to 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can wrap an ice cube in a cloth and apply it gently.
2. Cucumber Slices –
Cucumbers are rich in water and antioxidants, which work wonders in relieving eye fatigue and heaviness. They also help reduce dark circles and puffiness around the eyes.
How to use: Cut two thin slices of chilled cucumber. Close your eyes, place the slices on your eyelids, and relax for 10–15 minutes. You will feel an immediate cooling sensation.
3. Used Tea Bags –
Green tea and black tea bags contain caffeine and flavonoids. Their anti-inflammatory properties rapidly reduce eye puffiness and redness.
How to use: Instead of discarding used green tea bags, place them in the refrigerator to cool down. Once chilled, place them over your closed eyes for 10–12 minutes.
4. Pure Rose Water –
Rose water is known for its anti-bacterial and cooling properties. It is highly effective in relieving eye strain caused by screens and alleviating dry eyes.
How to use: Soak cotton pads or cotton balls in chilled rose water, place them over your eyes, and lie down for 10 minutes. You may also put 1–2 drops of pure rose water directly into your eyes, subject to a doctor's advice.
5. Aloe Vera Gel –
Aloe vera possesses natural cooling and healing properties. It is extremely beneficial if you are experiencing persistent burning or itching in your eyes due to screen time.
How to use: Chill fresh aloe vera gel in the refrigerator for a while. Then, using a cotton pad, gently apply it around your eyes and over your eyelids (ensure the gel does not get inside the eye). Wash your face with cold water after 5–10 minutes.

Small precautions are also important.
Along with home remedies, follow the "20-20-20 rule" while working on screens: every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Additionally, remember to blink frequently while working and stay hydrated by drinking enough water.
