Lung cancer is one of the growing, serious, and life-threatening health issues worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 2.5 million people are diagnosed with lung cancer annually, and more than 1.8 million deaths occur due to it. While it is commonly believed that smokers are at higher risk, the disease can also affect non-smokers. Smoking damages the cells lining the lungs. A high risk of this disease has been observed in India.

Health experts state that a major reason for mortality associated with lung cancer is the failure to diagnose the condition in time. In most cases, lung cancer does not manifest early symptoms, yet it is crucial to pay close attention to certain warning signs. Timely diagnosis and treatment can save lives.
Let us look at the symptoms that require serious attention.
**The Severity of Lung Cancer**
'World Lung Cancer Day' is observed globally on August 1st to raise awareness, facilitate early detection, and support those affected by the disease. It was initiated by the 'Forum of International Respiratory Societies' in 2012.
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is a serious condition requiring everyone to exercise caution. In most instances, lung cancer does not produce symptoms until it has spread.
Many symptoms of lung cancer resemble those of other illnesses, which is why timely diagnosis is often missed.
However, understanding the risk factors and taking preventive measures is essential for everyone.
**Do Not Ignore These Early Symptoms**
Doctors advise that if certain symptoms persist and do not respond to standard medications, one should immediately consult a specialist for an examination. It is particularly important to pay attention to the following signs:
A persistent or worsening cough lasting several weeks.
Persistent chest pain that intensifies when taking a deep breath, coughing, or laughing.
Hoarseness or a persistently raspy voice.
Unexplained, rapid weight loss.
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
Persistent fatigue and weakness.
Recurrent pneumonia or infections that do not fully clear up.
What complications arise if the cancer spreads?
If lung cancer spreads to other organs, symptoms can become more severe. In such cases, patients may experience additional serious problems:
Persistent pain in the bones, especially the back or hips.
Headaches, dizziness, or weakness or numbness in any part of the body.
Difficulty walking or maintaining balance.
Yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Swelling of lymph nodes in the neck or other parts of the body.
How can the risk be reduced?
Quitting smoking alone is not enough to prevent lung cancer. Even if you do not smoke, it is crucial to avoid secondhand smoke, pollution, and other risk factors. Therefore, try to stay away from the smoke produced by smokers.
Additionally, maintain a balanced diet rich in fresh fruits, green vegetables, and essential nutrients.
Regular exercise, yoga, and breathing exercises can help maintain optimal lung function.
If there is a family history of lung cancer or if suspicious symptoms persist for a long time, consulting a doctor and undergoing timely screening is the safest course of action.
